Nature-Inspired Palettes for Your Home

Whether you’re refreshing your living room decor or preparing for a full-scale renovation, selecting the right color palette can be downright overwhelming.

When I’m looking for design inspiration, I often turn to a home’s surroundings for help. From tropical greens and earthy sand to sky blues and dark charcoal, some of the best color palettes are found right outside your front door.

To help you pick out the perfect combination, I pulled together my top five favorite nature-inspired color palettes that work well together.

Sea Blue, Cream, and Black: Living in Santa Barbara and with the ocean never far, a color palette inspired by the sea is a given. While overly inspired coastal decor is a bit dated these days, pairing soft grayish blues with crisp whites and creams creates an earthy palette without being too literal. As blues are generally considered calming, this is a great palette for bedrooms and one of my go-to recommended color palettes for selling homes. Adding black or dark charcoal brings in depth and dimension and creates a modern feel.

Dark Charcoal, White, and Wood: Dark charcoal and blacks may sound depressing, but when combined with natural light, white paint, and warm wood tones, the colors become very inviting. Many dark charcoal colors have warm undertones, making them a beautiful pairing with wood. This high-contrast palette is softened by the wood tones and complements well with lots of texture and plants for an approachable feel.

Dusty Rose and Sand: This tone-on-tone combination reminds me of sunsets over the ocean, when the water and sky both turn a pale, dusty rose color and it’s difficult to tell where the water ends and the sky begins. Throw in the color of sand and you’ve got a soft color palette that’s anything from boring.

This color scheme pulls from pink and orange on the color wheel and includes various tints ranging from blush and rose to sand and gold. When using an analogous color scheme, be sure to include a variety of shades and textures for interest, such as knit throws and woven rugs. This feminine palette pairs well with grays and leather for a more balanced feel.

Green, Cream, and Light Wood: Like a walk through a eucalyptus grove, this palette is taken right out of our local preserves. Pairing sage and olive greens with light wood tones creates an earthy vibe, and adding white paint or furniture further creates a bright and airy feel. This palette pairs well with the Scandinavian and boho furniture trends popular today.

Rust, Cream, and Gray: While this color palette may not pull directly from our local flora and fauna, it certainly is found in the white stucco walls and red tile roofs that dominate downtown Santa Barbara and define so much of the architectural style of our beloved town. And if your home leans Spanish or Mediterranean in style, this earthy color palette is for you. This palette reminds me of the historic adobe homes throughout California and creates a cozy, serene space.

UCSB Reads Program Hosts Dinner with HappyCity Author Charles Montgomery

On May 10, UCSB Library hosted a dinner with Charles Montgomery, author of Happy City: Transforming Our Lives Through Urban Design, as part of the UCSB Reads program, a campuswide and community-wide one-book program. About 55 guests, including faculty, staff, students, and donors, enjoyed a reception, dinner, talk, and Q&A in the library’s Special Research Collections before Montgomery’s free public talk in Campbell Hall, co-presented with UCSB Arts & Lectures.

Guests were welcomed by University Librarian Kristin Antelman, who thanked many in attendance for their support, including Chancellor Henry Yang and Dilling Yang, who helped distribute 2,000 free copies of the book to students when this year’s program launched in January. Across several departments, 15 faculty members incorporated the book into their curriculum. For community members, hard copies, e-books, and audiobooks were made available through the S.B. Public Library.

In his remarks, Montgomery was most animated about the need for affordable housing in Santa Barbara and the rest of the nation. He discussed the tension between the incredible care we put into creating beautiful spaces and our love of the natural environment on the one hand, and the emerging social crisis of unaffordable housing on the other.

Here on the Central Coast, Montgomery posited, we have distilled the crisis, but people are facing it everywhere. People have to decide what they most care about, and Montgomery hopes that the desire for aesthetics and beauty “does not come at the expense of the lived experience of the now majority of people in this region who do not own their own homes.”

He shared how building housing in the right places is the answer to almost every problem we face today, including the vitality of downtown areas, inequities in society, and the environmental crisis. He implored guests to leave with a “sense of urgency to deal with this crisis and feel the pain of the people who live in their cars or drive one and a half hours to get to their job in Santa Barbara.”

Launched in 2007, UCSB Reads is co-presented by the University Library, the Office of the Executive Vice Chancellor, and other partners on and off campus. It seeks to bring the campus and the community together to read an intellectually stimulating, interdisciplinary book by a living author that appeals to a wide range of readers.

In addition to hosting lots of campusbased events that are open to the public, UCSB Reads also hosts events out in the community. This year’s community-focused events included panel discussions, walking tours, and a slow bike ride.

After parish priest Father Haralambos Fox spoke to the congregation about the spiritual call to be good stewards of the natural world, church members and guests strolled through the Gardens, now in glorious spring bloom.

According to Garden Director John McKinney, it all started with His All Holiness, Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, spiritual leader of the world’s 300 million Orthodox Christians. In 1997 he came to St. Barbara Greek Orthodox Church in Santa Barbara, California to lead an Environmental Symposium and to share his vision of how people of faith should care for the natural world.

“In response to the Patriarch’s environmental messages then and now, we decided to plant a garden,” explains McKinney. “One that would be sustainable, environmentally friendly, and significantly reduce water consumption.”

Native plants now thriving in the garden include lemonade berry, manzanita, toyon, golden yarrow, wooly blue curls, Bees Bliss purple sage, and several varieties of ceanothus. Joining the Southern California flora are plants from Mediterranean climes: Tuscan blue rosemary, Pride of Madeira and Jerusalem sage.

The three-year effort from vision to planning to planting was spearheaded by the parish’s Friends of the Garden who visited native plant displays throughout Southern California, including the renowned Santa Barbara Botanic Garden. Santa Barbara landscape architect Billy Goodnick designed the project, made possible by the generosity of the Fotine Drulias O’Connor Trust.

Phase II of the Gardens of St. Barbara project calls for the planting of many more native plants and construction of a nature trail that will loop around the 4.5-acre campus.

Restoring Damaged Ecosystems

On a par with climate change for impacting human civilization is our unsustainable use of global resources and our overtaxing of ecosystems. Our economic system is geared toward short-term profits with almost total disregard for finding critical nature-based solutions. Since we live on a finite planet, resources are limited and thus unlimited growth, the goal of GDP (gross domestic product), is clearly not feasible long-term.

After centuries of despoiling ecosystems, nature’s ability to continue to function is nearing an end. For example, our efforts to control water with dams and levees have compromised nature’s slow water processes. With the additional hit from climate change, we are now experiencing more extreme droughts and floods. Policies and approaches are starting to change, however. As the Sierra snowpack diminishes with rising temperatures, California is beginning to reopen long-ignored

floodplains to heavy rains in order to increase percolation into aquifer basins.

GOING GREEN

After superstorm Sandy, Staten Island induced more than 600 owners of exposed beach properties to withdraw, thereby creating a protective buffer of native plants. Historically, U.S. federal disaster relief required people to rebuild in the same location. Today, funds are starting to be available for relocation. In Britain, the government is developing a managed retreat plan from thousands of miles of coastline exposed to sea rise and rough North Atlantic storms. In Monrovia, a suburb of Los Angeles nestled against the San Gabriel Mountains, a natural zone along the foothills has been created by buying private lands to lessen risk to the town from wildfire and flooding.
