Barrett, of Hollywood gossip-reporting fame, explained how her father instilled in her a desire to help others and explained how when she came to the Santa Ynez Valley many years ago, she became concerned about low-income seniors there and pondered the fate of her own father if she could not take care of him. A 12-year process culmi nated in the opening of GIV in 2016, providing 40 one-bedroom and 20 studio units for low-income seniors and a multitude of programs and services for these residents.

On August 13, the Rona Barrett Foundation (RBF) hosted a Montecito Garden Party to raise awareness and funds for the next phase of its senior affordable housing Harry’s House which it is developing in partner ship with the Housing Authority of the City of S.B. (HASBARCO) on the same Santa Ynez campus as the Golden Inn & Village, also a partnership with HASBARCO.About80guests enjoyed an afternoon recep tion on the lovely grounds of the Riven Rock home of Kohanya and Scott Groff. During the program, Advisory Boardmember Anne Towbes shared, with warmth and passion, that many low-income seniors have been lucky to be able to reside at the Golden Inn & Village (GIV), and now Harry’s House will offer 60 more units, this time in a congregate care facility for more frail seniors. “In today’s challenging world,” Towbes remarked, “our diminutive Rona has achieved a Herculean task.”

RBF offers programs and services for residents, which it deems crucial for the residents’ well-being, all free of charge. These include six meals per week, medical screenings, a computer lab, arts and crafts classes, game days, and music performances.

According to HASBARCO Executive Director Bob Havlicek, the income of many of the residents served by his agency is limited to Social Security payments of only $800-$1,000 per month. When HASBARCO began accepting applications for the 60 units, it quickly received more than 500. Harry’s House, a $30-plus million project named after Barrett’s father, is a similar partner ship with HASBARCO, but with a different level of care: It will serve more frail seniors who can still live independently they don’t need a costly assisted-living facility but need or want some services. HASBARCO will offer a package of ser vices to residents, including all meals, light house keeping, and transportation, for $425 per month. RBF will provide supplemental services and pro grams to enrich residents’ lives, all free of charge. A facility offering this level of care has always been part of Barrett’s vision. And according to Havlicek, demand for this market niche is grow ing. In the City of Santa Barbara, both Gardens on Hope and Garden Court offer this level of care, but Havlicek noted that he is not aware of any other developments in the country that do so. Harry’s House, with 60 studios, is slated for completion in July Havlicek2023.

As I wrote my Way Back When series for 1914-1919, I was impressed by how many movies were being filmed in our area. I focused on Montecito because it was interesting to see how the estates there were used to represent Ancient Rome, France in the time of Louis XIV, etc. It was also interesting that so many estates were open to movie studios filming on their properties, compared to the present day when most estates are hidden. Did you have a passion for silent films before this project?

LOCAL AUTHOR DEBUTS BOOK: MOVIES & MILLION-DOLLAR MANSIONS: SILENT MOVIES MADE IN MONTECITO

I started out thinking that Santa Barbara’s “Flying A” studio did nearly all of the filming in Montecito. But I discovered that more than 15 studios from the Hollywood area traveled up here to film at Montecito’s estates.

Montecito is home to celebrities and roy alty, with mansions hidden behind tall hedges, long drive ways, and locked gates. But a century ago, the welcome mat was out for actors and film crews making movies set in tropi cal islands, Ancient Rome, and other lo cales.Local author & his torian Betsy J. Green has found 65 silent movies that were filmed in and at Montecito’s multi-million-dollar es tates back in the glory days, and has compiled her research into a newlyreleased book, “Movies & MillionDollar Mansions: Silent Movies Made in Montecito.” In addition to Santa Barbara’s “Flying A” studio, as many as nine teen Hollywood studios also filmed in Montecito during the 19teens and 1920s. In the early decades of filming, before the years of big budgets, it was more cost effective to find an existing mansion than to build one or to create a realistic set. Montecito’s proximity to Holly wood and wealth of luxurious es tates made it an attractive solution The films were befitting of their settings, begin ning with religious themes in 1911, then turned into melodramas and adventure; 1928 saw a jazz-age movie based on a Broadway musical. The book is structured with a chapter for each movie. Each contains a lively synopsis, behind-the-scenes info, plus photos from the film and its million-dollar setting, with over 450 im ages in total. The book’s cover contains a scene from a movie that was filmed at the first “Bellosguardo” man sion.Green, who also authors the Independent’s Great House Detective column, will present her book at Chaucer’s Books on August 29 at 6:00 PM, as well as other upcoming local venues. We sat down to ask Green about the inspiration be hind her efforts. How did you choose this particular topic?

I didn’t have a special interest in silent films before I began research ing Santa Barbara history in the 19teens. As I looked through old newspapers, I got curious about the movies playing in the local cinemas, and started looking for these movies online. Watching old silent films is a way to travel back into the past. What was something that surprised you while do ing research for the book?

Heat waves are becoming more frequent, more extreme, and more widespread. Air-condi tioning (AC) is ubiquitous in the U.S. (90 percent penetra tion), but not in Europe and many other regions where it is increasingly becoming a necessity. Outside the U.S., less than 25 percent of people in regions that merit AC have it. Consequently, the International Energy Agency expects AC energy con sumption to triple worldwide by 2050. Unfortunately, AC, in its current form, carries significant environmental costs: More demand for cooling leads to more warming of the planet. In addition, the refrigerants used in cooling condensers are 2,000-3,000 times more potent than carbon dioxide as a climate-warming agent when it leaks into the atmosphere.

Gradient Comfort, a San Francisco–based company, is tackling AC’s climate predicament their mission is to push the industry to zero carbon emissions. Gradient has developed an innovative window cooling and heating unit that is both efficient and eco-friendly. It is a heat pump, a technology gaining in popularity for centralized heating and cooling sys tems because of energy efficiency, but such equipment tends to be bulky, expensive, and requires professionals to install. Gra dient’s technology, however, offers a sleek, affordable, and compact alternative.

Although Gradient needs more improvements to reach its goal of zero greenhouse-gas emissions, it has taken big first steps in addressing the widespread flaws in existing systems: high cost, cum bersome installations, and unsightliness. These are important directions for wide spread adoption of cooling including in less affluent areas of the world.

Gradient won the Fast Company’s 2022 World-Changing Ideas Award. The cool ing component is 30 percent more effi cient than traditional window units. When both heating and cooling are combined, the improved efficiency jumps to 75 per cent. Another big plus is the refrigerant: Although still a hydrofluorocarbon, the fluid used by Gradient has a quarter the global devicemore.refrigeranttoTheymanufactures.usedpotentialwarmingofthosebyotherACareworkingimprovetheirevenTheGradientisdesigned to use only the amount of energy required as it is turned up or down.
