Getting Crafty With Cane

MAURICIO BERGAMIN PHOTOS

THE STYLE SPECIALIST

I

f there is an interior design trend that has dominated for the past few years, it’s definitely cane. And it’s not hard to understand why. Natural materials such as rattan, wicker, and cane create an earthy, light, and airy feeling in a home while still being modern and stylish. Cane has reigned supreme, possibly for its ability to blend in with so many different decor styles and design eras. I’m a sucker for its organic look and, even more important, its sustainable nature. When California shut down in March 2020, I found myself wanting to redecorate my home but couldn’t justify the expense. Instead, I researched ways to add cane webbing to an existing piece of furniture to hack my way into creating the look I wanted. After watching a few online DIY video tutorials, I decided I was up for the task of transforming my plain sideboard into a statement piece. Here’s my step-by-step guide to add cane webbing to the glass-paneled doors. To get started, you’ll need:

words, if the glass is 32 inches by 16 inches, cut the cane to 34 inches by 18 inches. Step 4: Soak the cane in warm

water for 20 minutes. By getting the fibers of the cane wet, the webbing becomes more pliable. Remove from the water and lay it on a towel, then cover with another towel and press down to absorb as much water as possible. Step 5: Lay the damp cane in

Step 1: Select and prepare the piece of furniture you’ll use for the project. Assuming you’re adding cane webbing to a cabinet with glass doors, like I did, remove the doors and measure the area to be covered with the webbing. We decided to keep the clear glass in place on the cabinet door and add the webbing to the interior (back) side of the door. Step 2: Determine the type of cane you’ll use. Cane web-

• Scissors

bing comes in different weave patterns; the two most popular are hexagonal and radio weave. The hexagonal cane is easily recognizable for its geometric pattern, while radio-weave cane is a simple one over, one under pattern. I loved the tight weave of the radio cane, so I found an online seller and purchased the amount needed for my project.

• Sink, bucket or bathtub, and a towel

Step 3: Once you’re ready to begin, cut the cane webbing

• Media cabinet or sideboard with clear glass doors • Cane webbing • Measuring tape

• Staple gun with staples

about two inches larger than the glass panel. In other

place on the cabinet door and staple the top side using your staple gun. Once you’ve attached the webbing at the top, pull the piece of webbing to the bottom (opposite side) and staple in place. Don’t use too much force to stretch the cane but do try to get it as flat and even as possible. Step 6: Repeat step five to attach the left and right sides

of the webbing.

Step 7: Wait about 20-30 minutes for the cane to start

drying. As it begins to dry, the fibers shrink, causing the webbing to tighten and lie flat. Step 8: Cut the excess cane off the sides with scissors and reattach the doors.

Voilà … you’re done! I’d LOVE to see your DIY projects. Tag me on Instagram @styledandstagedsb and show me your creations!

Attacking Emissions by Removing Ocean Carbon

W

e now realize that addressing climate change requires more than reducing our greenhousegas emissions to zero, a challenge that all efforts to date have been woefully inadequate in achieving. For this reason, researchers around the world are looking for effective and economical ways to sequester CO2 from the atmosphere. A number of solutions are showing promise; some are in the trial phase. A research team at UCLA’s Institute for Carbon Management is exploring a totally different approach to atmospheric drawdown. The UCLA scientists have developed by Dennis Allen a flow reactor that takes in a continuous flow of seawater and runs it through a mesh charged at a specific electrical frequency to render the water alkaline. This kicks off a chemical reaction that combines the dissolved CO2 with naturally occurring calcium and magnesium abundant in seawater.

GOING GREEN

The outcome is limestone and magnesite. This process is similar to how seashells form. The yielded minerals are durable, safe, and permanent. The seawater that flows out of the back end of the reactor is depleted of dissolved CO2 and thus ready to absorb more carbon from the skies. The only other byproduct is hydrogen, a clean fuel. There are several key advantages to this approach. First, a given volume of seawater holds about 150 times more carbon than an equivalent volume of air. Second, it is a single-step carbon sequestration and storage (sCS2) process, unlike the multistep atmospheric sequestering processes being explored. This simplification gives it economic and scalable benefits. The oceans and the atmosphere work in a constant state of equilibrium. The oceans have countless plant-like organisms called phytoplankton that absorb CO2 through photosynthesis. As humans have pumped more carbon emissions into the atmosphere, the oceans have absorbed more

carbon, making them more acidic and contributing to the die-off of coral reefs and threats to some shellfish. Many approaches to sequestration are needed and soon. The economics of various approaches will be key to which becomes ascendant. Drawing down a large percentage of the 37 billion met-

ric tons of CO2 we produce annually is daunting. The single-step simplification of the UCLA approach, its scalability, its taking inspiration from nature, and the commercialization of the solid mineral and hydrogen by-products offer a major contribution to the race to capture carbon emissions.

Dennis Allen is chair of Allen Construction, an employee-owned company committed to building and operating sustainably. He also serves as chair of the Dean’s Council at the Bren School of Environmental Science & Management at UCSB and as a boardmember of the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History.

ARCHITECTURALLY SPEAKING by Elisa Garcia, AIA

A

s surprising as it may seem, interior design has the power to encourage your healthiest lifestyle. 90 percent of our lives are spent indoors. Living and working in well-designed spaces can make the difference between living a happy life or an unsatisfactory one. A well-designed space is one that supports and promotes health and well-being through functional elements, aesthetic choices, and spatial layout. Here are five crucial elements to consider in any environment you occupy:

have gaskets, sweeps, and a non-hollow core to mitigate sound transmission between rooms.

Light

Ventilation & Cleanability

Noise

Acoustics are often overlooked in traditional interior design. What you hear throughout the day will have a profound impact on your mental wellness. Consistent background noise is stressful and leaves you prone to fatigue. Prolonged fatigue causes psychological stress, including decreased mental acuity, low motivation, and irritability. Window treatments and acoustic panels will help manage noise from both inside and outside. Walls should have appropriate insulation and detailing, and doors should

Color

Use the colors of nature, like blues and greens, in spaces where you want to encourage a sense of calm and relaxation. If you hope to design an environment that promotes alertness and activity, try using warm colors like red, yellow, and orange. For maximum health benefits, it’s important to create a space with proper ventilation that can be cleaned and disinfected easily. This will ensure that everyone who enters and inhabits the space is being protected from harmful microbes and toxins. To keep harmful bacteria away, add an entryway walkoff system composed of grilles, grates, or slots that allow for easy cleaning underneath. An entryway vestibule is always a good idea at the main entrance of the building. Inside the space, replace any wall-to-wall carpeting with smooth, hard flooring. If you use area rugs to soften the aesthetic of the space, opt for a smaller size that is easy to clean.

Layout

The spatial layout of your home and office can directly improve your physical activity and health. The integration

of visually appealing interior pathways and stairs within buildings can provide a convenient way to incorporate short periods of physical activity. Create different seating areas and entertaining spaces that encourage people to move around throughout the day. Another way that spatial design affects your well-being is by mitigating clutter. Having ample storage solutions in your home and office will encourage you to stay organized and therefore reduce the chances of overwhelm. This article doesn’t cover all the ways that interior design can influence our mental and physical health, but it’s a start. Think about these factors the next time you enter your home, office, and other environments. What design changes can you make to promote your healthiest lifestyle?

BY BOB WALSMITH JR. - 2022 PRESIDENT - SANTA BARBARA ASSOCIATION OF REALTORS®

SMART HOME TECHNOLOGY CAN BE A SELLING POINT speaker, hub, and smart plugs in three rooms, according to FixR.com. What Else Adds Smart Tech Appeal Bigger brand names in smart home technology — like Nest, Ring, and Lutron — have instant name recognition when selling. Ease of use also counts. With smart devices, you’ll need to be clear about what stays and what goes with the home sale. It’s a gray area with some of these devices on what’s considered personal property. It’s important to get this in writing. 3 Ways to Avoid Misunderstandings 1. Find an agent with smart technology expertise. They can help avoid hiccups in selling a smart home and tend to be savvy tech marketers. 2. Identify which of your smart home technology devices or apps are real property versus personal property. In general, items affixed or hardwired to a house stay. If you plan to take your Nest thermostat or Ring doorbell, replace it before listing. 3. Turn over the virtual keys. On closing day, turning over the passwords in a smart home is like turning over the key to the front door. For all transferable technology, reset it to factory settings to erase any personal data. Leave instruction manuals or website links for the new owners. Smart home technology is improving safety, security, and convenience in homes. Homeowners should also consider the benefits they’ll have when they sell one day. Just like curb appeal, high home appeal may make your home a standout to buyers.

REALTOR, SRS, ABR, SRES, GREEN “It was such a wonderful experience working with Cimme. She was very hard working, wise, honest, and effective in communicating with us throughout the entire process. She helped us sell our home just 3 days after listing it! We would highly recommend Cimme – she is an excellent real estate agent.”

If so, it might be the next case for The Great House Detective!
