The Weekender

If we look at the dictionary to help us define what weekend means, we find this: “The period from Friday evening through Sunday evening, especially regarded as a time for leisure.” If only it were this! With our Mondays through Fridays packed like sardines with working, family, sports, and obligations of all sorts, it’s inevitable that there is spillage into the weekend.

Not having downtime on the weekend makes for a cranky population by the time Monday morning comes rolling around once again. While it might seem counterintuitive to have a list for the weekend, that is precisely what I’m suggesting. A “weekend” list helps create more space for you to get done what you need to AND have some leisure time, which is what weekends were invented for!

So, here are some questions to consider: What happens when you are at work and something you need to do over the weekend pops into your head? Something like picking up the lawnmower at a repair shop or returning that item to Costco? Do you: (a) grab a sticky and jot it down, (b) add it to your daily to-do list, (c) let it fly out of your head and hope to heck that you remember to get it done come Saturday, or (d) add it to your “weekend list”?

If you answered (d) you are on the right track! Creating a weekend to-do list ensures that you have time for both work AND play on the weekend. It’s a way to clear the decks to focus on work while keeping the home fires burning. Here’s why:

• A weekend list helps you relax during non-work times. Without it, your mind is constantly swirling, trying to remember everything you want and need to get done before Monday morning. Without the list, you aren’t ever truly off duty.

• It helps you keep focused during work hours. If something comes to mind to get done over the

weekend, you don’t need to remember it just add it to your list.

• A list allows you to have a weekend. Without it, we are often left thinking about all the things we need to do and resisting doing them because it’s the weekend. Make your list, get things done, and then relax. Or, as some say: Work hard, play hard.

• It sets you up for success on Monday morning. You aren’t left feeling bad that you didn’t get anything done over the weekend with a list, you get done what you need to in your personal life, and come Monday morning, you can feel good that you’re ready to hit the ground running with no residual did-I-or-didn’t-I-get-everything-done feelings.

• It helps you be productive and move projects forward.

Don’t fret about what tool to use to make the list. Spiralbound notebook, iPhone notes your choice. The important thing is to create the list. Once the task is on the list, it’s a safe bet it will get done. Trust me on this. If you are diligent enough to make the list, you are diligent enough to accomplish the tasks. Trust yourself on this.

Okay, now that you orchestrated your weekend to have gobs of open time, as opposed to running around and ruminating about what’s not getting done, you may be wondering, “Okay, now what?”

This is the fun part. And what makes it doubly fun is that it contributes to your productivity at work, because you’ll be recharged and raring to go. Other than number one, the following aren’t in order of importance.

• Spend time with family and friends. All of us know how time flies, especially as we age. We’ve all experienced something, such as a school year or specific work project, in “the blink of an eye.” So why do we take personal relationships for granted? When was the last time you watched your child’s soccer match without checking emails or returning phone calls? Weekends allow time for truly being with loved ones.

• Move, be active, exercise. Doesn’t matter what you call it use your body. Our society of desk jockeys isn’t conducive to raising heartbeats. No gym or organized league of a specific sport necessary. Play with your child. Really get into some yard work. Sweep the garage.

• Pursue a passion. What’s your hobby? When did you last dabble? Don’t have one? No time like the present to start. A new sport, cooking, gardening, skydiving, rock collecting … the list is endless.

• Socialize. Maybe it’s volunteer work or time with neighbors. Connecting with others completes us. This doesn’t mean you have to be friends with everyone.

• Create some inner space. Reflect or recharge. Some people may call this going to church. Others call it meditation. The label is not important. The action is.

It’s time to bring back the lost meaning of the weekend for rest and relaxation. The first step is to make a weekend list. If you haven’t already, I hope you will start now.

Cottage Health Celebrates at Tiara Ball

On March 25 at the Ritz-Carlton Bacara, Cottage Health hosted its Tiara Ball for 400 supporters. The event raised funds for S.B. Cottage Hospital’s emergency, trauma, and critical care services.

Oddly enough, the last big pre-COVID lockdown event was Cottage’s February 29, 2020 Tiara Ball, when 500 people stood shoulder-to-shoulder in the foyer during the reception, with a lot of chatter about something called a coronavirus heading our way.

The theme for this year’s gathering, the first since 2020, was Constellation of Caring. Guests enjoyed a reception in the foyer and on the patio before adjourning to the ballroom, which was adorned in a gold and blue celestial theme, complete with hanging metallic spheres and lights.

A video featured a former patient, Keilani Waxdeck, who sustained multiple traumatic injuries, sharing her gratitude for the care she received during her one-month stay at Cottage.

Board Chair Steve Zola welcomed guests and announced that Cottage’s Reaching Higher Together Campaign raised $150 million, exceeding its $130 million goal. He thanked Campaign Co-Chairs Jelinda DeVorzon and Greg Faulkner along with all the donors.

President and CEO Ron Werft shared some of the uses of the Campaign proceeds, including the expansion of S.B. Cottage Hospital’s Emergency Department from one designed to serve 25,000 patients annually to one designed to serve 75,000 patients. The ER presently serves about 44,000 patients annually, so significant growth was in the plan.

Werft noted that along with a larger size, the new ER has a whole new layout designed to better triage those needing immediate care and those with lower acuity illnesses. Once the

project is completed at the end of the year, in recognition of an extraordinary gift, Cottage will have the Naomi and Ben Bollag Emergency and Trauma Department.

Campaign proceeds also made possible the renovation and refurbishment of the Little Cottages, which are now the Cottage Family Suites, a 12-unit apartment complex one block from S.B. Cottage Hospital for out-of-the-area family members visiting patients. About 26 percent of patients at Cottage come from outside the area.

Proceeds support medical education and training programs, including a new simulation training center for both the teaching program and staff. Patterned after the best in the country, the center, according to Werft, will be on par with the best academic health centers in the United States. Construction starts soon.

Campaign proceeds enabled the establishment of a pediatric residency program, which will help address the shortage of pediatricians. The first class is in place now. Cottage already had residency programs in internal medicine, general surgery, and radiology.

Werft then gave an update on other hospital developments, including the expansion of virtual care, which began in December 2019, right before COVID hit. The platform now includes a Spanish-language version, which, according to Werft, serves as a very important access point for the Latino community, which makes up 46 percent of our community. Cottage has also expanded its nurse practitionerled urgent care centers to 15. Located between S.L.O. and Camarillo, these provide 400-500 visits daily.

Werft concluded by paying a muchdeserved tribute to staff for their service throughout the pandemic.

Guests then got to dance the night away to music by The Lowdown band.

urchins, their principal food, exploded. The result was urchins consuming the giant kelp to the point of destruction. Decimation of these forests exposes our coastline to the ravages of violent storms.

Healthy Ecosystems Are Critical to Our Survival

As our understanding of ecosystems has deepened, so has our appreciation of the role of keystone species. A keystone is a wedge-shaped piece of stone at the crown of an arch that locks all the pieces in place. A keystone species holds an ecosystem together. Without such a species, an entire ecosystem would radically change and often collapse altogether.

Keystone species perform in various ways. There are apex predators, which keep a

balance among many other populations. When these top predators are removed, ecosystem imbalance follows. Creatures they once hunted multiply rapidly, pushing out other organisms and reducing community diversity. Sea otters are apex predators. They maintain the health of coastal kelp forests forests that provide food, shelter, nursery habitat, and hunting grounds for an abundance of fish, marine mammals, and other species. When otters were hunted to near extinction, the population of sea

GOING GREEN

As we killed off wolves, ecosystems changed and went into decline. When wolves were reintroduced into Yellowstone National Park, scientists were amazed at how rapidly they restored a biodiverse community. In our coastal tide pools, the sea star is the species that controls diversity, for when they are absent, mussels crowd out 15 or more other tide-pool dwellers, including algae, limpets, anemones, and sponges.

Their dams create ponds, wetlands, and marshes that support a rich concentration of fish, insects, amphibians, birds, and other animals. They provide a remarkable number of services: improve water quality, replenish aquifers, alleviate drought, reduce flooding, and diminish the risk of wildfires. Another bioengineer is the prairie dog. Approximately 150 species of birds and animals rely on ecosystems created by them for their sustenance and habitat, including burrowing owls, coyotes, hawks, ferrets, bison, elk, and jackrabbits.

Salmon is a keystone that exerts control as both predator and prey, while also supplying critical nutrients to both aquatic and terrestrial riparian ecosystems. They migrate between freshwater and open ocean throughout their lifetimes, during which they impact 137 other species in all kinds of ways.

Ecosystem engineers are another keystone category. They create, modify, or maintain the landscape around them. They influence the prevalence and activities of other organisms and help define the biodiversity of their surroundings. Beavers are the quintessential example of this type.

The mutualist keystone is typified by two or more species engaging in reciprocally vital interactions. Pollinators and hummingbirds fit this pattern. They rely on specific plants for nourishment, and the plants rely on them to reproduce. Bees are critical to 90 percent of the world’s flowering plants, which produce most of the seeds, nuts, berries, and fruit on which countless other species depend, including us humans. We need to do everything possible to support awareness, research, and policies to protect, enhance, and restore ecosystems and their vital keystone species.

Real Estate as Theater

Q: Marsha, I am seriously considering getting a real estate license. Can you give me an idea of what I’m getting into?

A: Congratulations! You have chosen an interesting, fun, and vital career. Real estate moves our economy on many levels. A good metaphor for real estate is a theater performance. We all enjoy a good play, and real estate agents have a special seat in the balcony. A real estate transaction is a drama, a comedy, a melodrama, and even has a strong touch of the absurd. Agents perform as directors, stagehands, and sometimes unwilling participants.

Let’s consider a home purchase. The opening act begins with the agent showing the buyer current homes on the market. The worst that can happen is when the buyer falls in love with the first home shown to her. “I love it, love it, love it,” she exclaims. “I don’t want to view any more houses.” “But we have six more homes scheduled.” “Cancel the appointments,” she states. “This is the one.” Then she says those words you never want to hear: “This is going to be the easiest sale you ever had!”

While the buyer is raving about the character and perfection of the home, her Realtor is looking beneath the charisma. What does the musty smell mean, why is there a crack in the wall, and what is that stain on the ceiling? At some point these observations will become relevant.

Once a contract has been formed, the second act begins. The shine is beginning to come off the home for the buyer. A home inspector is hired. Hours are spent at the house. “I’d get a mold inspection,” he sniffs. “I wonder if that’s asbestos?” he asks. “That crack could mean foundation

problems,” he adds.

During Act Two, other complications can arise. The house must appraise at the negotiated price.

Will the home appraise when the house next door sold for less money two months ago? While the buyer and seller are discussing the physical inspection and needed repairs, the agents are anxious about the buyer’s loan.

Finally, Act Two is drawing to a close. The home has been appraised, the buyer has conditional loan approval, and the seller agreed to reasonable repairs. The agent relaxes; the contract will close in two days.

Suddenly, the buyer’s agent receives a call from the bank. The buyer is shopping for a new car. The lender states that if the buyer takes on any more debt, she won’t qualify for the home loan. The agent frantically calls the buyer. Wait to purchase the Tesla!

Act Three is the denouement. The loan is funded, and the new owner cheerfully receives the keys to her new home. The agent smiles when the buyer turns to her and says, “I told you it would be the easiest sale you ever had.” Real estate is one of the most rewarding professions around. I look forward to working with you.

HYBRID MEETINGS VS IN-PERSON MEETINGS: PROS AND CONS

TheCOVID-19 pandemic has forever changed the way we work and interact with one another. One of the most significant changes has been the rise of virtual meetings, which have become a mainstay in the business world and with our local Santa Barbara real estate brokerages and our Santa Barbara Association committees and board of directors. As the world begins to reopen, many businesses are considering hybrid meetings combining in-person and virtual attendees. Check out some of the pros and cons of Hybrid meetings.

Pros of Hybrid Meetings

1. Flexibility

Hybrid meetings offer greater flexibility than inperson meetings. Attendees can choose to participate in person or remotely, depending on their location, schedule, and preference. This flexibility can make it easier to schedule and coordinate meetings, especially for businesses with remote or distributed teams, making everyone very efficient.

2. Cost Savings

Hybrid meetings can also be more cost-effective than in-person meetings. Businesses can save on travel expenses and meeting room rentals by allowing some attendees to participate remotely.

3. Increased Accessibility

Hybrid meetings can increase accessibility for individuals with disabilities or other limitations. Remote attendees can participate in the meeting from anywhere with an internet connection, making it easier for individuals who may have difficulty traveling or attending in-person meetings.

Cons of Hybrid Meetings

1. Technical Difficulties

One of the main drawbacks of hybrid meetings is the potential for technical difficulties. Remote attendees may experience connectivity issues or difficulty hearing or

seeing the meeting. This can lead to delays, confusion, and frustration for in-person and remote attendees.

2. Decreased Engagement

Hybrid meetings can also lead to decreased engagement among attendees. Remote attendees may feel disconnected or disengaged from the meeting, decreasing participation and contribution. Additionally, in-person attendees may become distracted or disengaged very easily.

3. Difficulty Building Relationships

Hybrid meetings can make it more difficult to build relationships among attendees. In-person meetings allow attendees to connect and interact on a more personal level, which can help build trust and rapport. Remote attendees may feel isolated or excluded from these interactions, leading to difficulty building relationships with in-person attendees.

Pros of In-Person Meetings

1. Personal Interaction

One of the main benefits of in-person meetings is the opportunity for personal interaction. In-person meetings allow attendees to connect on a more personal level, build relationships, and develop trust.

2. Higher Engagement

In-person meetings can also lead to higher levels of engagement among attendees. Attendees are more likely to participate and contribute when physically present, leading to more productive and effective meetings.

3. Better Communication

In-person meetings can also facilitate better communication among attendees. Nonverbal cues and body language are easier to interpret in person, which can help avoid misunderstandings and improve communication.

Cons of In-Person Meetings

1. Cost and Logistics

In-person meetings can be costly and timeconsuming to organize. Businesses may need to rent meeting spaces, provide travel and accommodations for attendees, and coordinate schedules. Additionally, in-person meetings may be less flexible than hybrid meetings, making them hard to coordinate.

2. Limited Accessibility

In-person meetings may also be less accessible for individuals with disabilities or other limitations. Attendees may need to travel to a specific location, which can be difficult for individuals with mobility issues or other disabilities. Additionally, in-person meetings may be less accessible for remote or distributed teams.

3. Environmental Impact

In-person meetings can have a significant environmental impact, particularly if attendees need to travel long distances.

While I feel that we should not just forget about amazing technology, which allows virtual meetings from anywhere in the world and is super efficient. I do feel that in-person meetings, at least once a month or more, should still happen if possible, as the energy, connection, and collaboration are so much more powerful in person. REALTORS® are using this virtual technology to better assist their clients with virtual walkthroughs, video tours, and FaceTime videos through properties. These are a fantastic way to assist buyers and sellers connect and highlight properties efficiently and with clients not local.

Embrace new technology, but always remember that a human in-person connection is very impactful.
